Students will fluently use place value to decompose addends to find the total sum. The suggested public discussion of student work shows connected solution paths. Discussing this work publicly is important because the students will decompose numbers and use strategies to find the sum of two 2-digit numbers. Four pieces of work are shown. The first shows the basic algorithm to add numbers using the stacking strategy. The second work shows how a student decomposed two numbers, looked for friendly numbers, and added them efficiently to get the desired answer. The third work shows another way to add numbers using place value. The fourth work shows how a student breaks apart the numbers to look for combinations of tens and recombines them using base ten. This Student Work Discussion Plan was created by a member of the 2015 Delaware Dream Team. Special Materials: base ten blocks (optional)
