The purpose of this lesson is to analyze how the author uses the interactions between individuals, events and ideas to create a realization that every choice we make has an impact on others. Readers begin by identifying the setting of "A Mother's Words," a letter written from a mother to her son who died in Vietnam. Students will analyze how the author uses figurative language to establish mood and tone. The culminating focus question requires students to connect pieces of evidence across the entire text to show how her son's choices have an impact on her life and that of his fellow soldiers. Special Materials: Students will need a copy of the anchor text.
