This lesson builds on students' understanding of rate by using a walkathon context for computing unit rates from fractional amounts. Students compute the unit rate, total distance walked and the amount of money earned. Students may use strategies such as making a table or multiplying by the inverse. This builds toward finding unit rates from fractional amounts as well as converting minutes to hours, relating fractions and decimals, and fraction multiplication and division. Big Ideas: Recognize that the relationship between quantities in a rate are proportional and can be expressed using multiplicative reasoning. Compute a unit rate from fractional amounts using a rate table or the multiplicative inverse. Vocabulary: Multiplicative Inverse, Multiplicative Reasoning, Per, Rate Table, Unit Rate
