In this lesson, students will understand that when trains came to America they changed the physical landscape of the country and the life of early pioneers in the United States. Students capture these ideas in a written response using text evidence from the article. Students will build upon and apply their understanding of what transportation was like prior to trains coming to America, and the idea of westward expansion due to the creation of a transcontinental railroad to address the prompt. This series of close reading lesson plans was created by a member of the 2015 Delaware Dream Team. Special Materials: Students will need a copy of the anchor text. Paper or notebook for their written response. Pencil.
