Students should understand that a number compared to 100 is the same as the relationship of part-to-whole. This is the basic idea of "percent". The suggested public discussion of student work shows solution paths that are connected through the use of part-to-whole relationships and division. It is important to discuss the connected path so that the students see how the percent out of 100 relates to a ratio and its application to this real world problem. Three pieces of work are shown, beginning with a student that worked the problem backwards. The next response begins with the understanding that division of the total tip amount will work backwards to show the original meal total. The third response shows a response that shows proportional reasoning and how the percent is out of 100. This Student Work Discussion Plan was created by a member of the 2015 Delaware Dream Team.
