KM4 C24 L124 Baking & Making Words: -op word family (Pre- Alphabetic)

 Baking & Making Words

Teacher Preparation:

  • Teacher assigns or prepares to display the activity.

Procedure:

  1. Teacher models the activity by choosing one consonant along with "-op" (e.g., “bop”, “dop”, etc.) and building it by dragging and dropping letters.
  2. Teacher reads the words and notes whether they are real or nonsense, leaving only real words in the oven.
  3. Teacher encourages students to say some words they would like to make with the "-op" word ending.
  4. Students drag and drop the letters to make words in their "oven" leaving only the real words they create.
  5. Students create a series of words and then read them aloud before they “bake” them, “eat” them and then make a new set of words.

Differentiation

  • Students can copy the words given to them on cards by the teacher.

Extensions

  • Students can write the words after they “bake” them on the "Write your recipes" tab or on paper.
