KM4 C22 L114 Baking & Making Words: “-zz,” “-ff,” “-ss,” and “-ll” (Full and Consolidated)

Baking & Making Words

Teacher Preparation:

  • Teacher assigns or prepares to display the activity.

  1. Teacher models the activity by choosing one consonant, one vowel, and one set of twin powers (e.g., “bill”, “jazz”, etc.) and building it by dragging and dropping letters.
  2. Teacher reads the words and notes whether they are real or nonsense, leaving only real words in the oven. Remind students the letters have "twin power’" because the two letters work together to protect the short vowel sound.
  3. Teacher encourages students to say some words that include twin powers.
  4. Students drag and drop the letters to make words in their "oven" leaving only the real words they create.
  5. Students create a series of words and then read them aloud before they “bake” them, “eat” them and then make a new set of words.

  • Students can copy the words given to them on cards by the teacher.

  • Students can write the words after they “bake” them on the "Write your recipes" tab or on paper.
