Big Ideas: Area is an expression of how much surface is covered. Both the size of the square unit and the number of units are needed to measure the area of a figure. This lesson builds on understanding unit squares as the standard measurement for area. In the task, students will compare the area of figures constructed from unit squares with different sized units. Understanding that the number of square units needed to cover a figure depends on the size of the square unit builds a stronger ability to reason abstractly and quantitatively about area. This builds toward conceptually understanding area as it relates to multiplication and addition. When square units are arranged in an array, multiplication can be used to find the number of squares. Vocabulary: compare inequality area square unit (unit square) square centimeter square inch square foot square meter Special Materials: square centimeters (centimeter cubes work well or attached grid could be used) square inches (attached grid could be cut out) square feet (12" x 18" paper cut into 1 foot squares) square meter tiles (newspaper opened up and taped together can model this) centimeter grid paper inch grid paper
