Students will understand how to use a unit rate to compare the costs of various numbers of two kinds of items. Given several combinations of numbers of items and costs, students will sort the items into two categories using reasoning about the price per item. The suggested public discussion of student work shows solution paths that are connected through the use of unit rate. It is important to discuss the connections publicly so that students see how different strategies actually use the same concept of unit rate. Three pieces of work are shown, beginning with a response that shows finding the unit rate for each order using division. The next response begins with the price given for one item, and shows checking that unit price in each order. The third response shows an understanding that the price for the respective items is constant, and should result in points that fall in a straight line when graphed. Special Materials: None
