Inflection Match-Up

Teacher Preparation:

  • Teacher assigns or prepares to display the activity.

Procedure:

  1. Teacher models the activity by dragging one base word (e.g., “swim”) and one ending (e.g., “ing”).
  2. Teacher reads aloud the word that is created (e.g., “swimming”).
  3. Teacher thinks aloud to determine how to apply the 1-1-1 doubling rule. Teacher types it at the bottom.
  4. Teacher explains that students should try each ending with each base word.
  5. Students begin.
  6. Repeat as time allows.

Differentiation:

  • For a more challenging version of the game, teacher could create cards that include prefixes and suffixes.
