Blending Boxes

Teacher Preparation:

  • Teacher assigns or prepares to display the activity.

Procedure:

  1. Teacher demonstrates with the word “pill”:
    1. Teacher says each phoneme separately while dragging a chip into each box (/p/ /i/ /l/)
    2. Teacher blends phonemes together while dragging the mouse or sliding finger under boxes and says word
      aloud: “pill”
    3. Point out both "ll"s go into one box because they make one sound together.
  2. Student repeats with words provided by teacher.
  3. Words can include: pass, razz, gull, call, dill, tell, bell, doll, loss.
  4. Repeat as time allows.

Extension:

  • Use 4 box sound board with words that could include: cliff, fluff, staff, sniff, grass, gloss, spell.
