Big Ideas: Data can be represented using tables, charts, and graphs, and the type of display is determined by the type of data. There are numerical measures that describe the center and spread of data. This lesson builds on students’ work in 6th grade in creating dot plots, histograms, and box plots. The task in this lesson plan asks students to consider which is the most appropriate graphical display to use to represent South Carolina voting data from the 2012 presidential election. The first big idea connects data with tables, charts, and graphs. While this lesson plan focuses on representing data, it builds toward the second big idea--that we can describe data by looking at its shape, center, and spread.
