Big Ideas: The equation of a circle can be derived by completing the square. This task begins with deriving the standard form of a circle by completing the square. The launch encourages students to begin by completing the square in steps with different boxes that need to be filled in. Then students are led into the task where they are asked to explore possible values of r that will constitute positive values. Students are reminded of the necessity of a positive value because of needing to take the square root of the radius when the equation of a circle is in standard form. Vocabulary: complete the square
