The focus question for Day 1 allows students to evaluate the non-fiction historical document, identifying the author's overall purpose by identifying specific comments made by the author. Additionally, students consider evidence that the author includes in order to support the intended purpose. The close reading skills the students use in this first day will help build and develop the additional lessons successfully for the entire unit.
