This lesson leads readers to grasp how the structure of the poem focuses on a chronological arrangement of stanzas, and how the division of stanzas highlights the contrasting emotions within each. The stanzas of "Casey at the Bat" fit together to show changes in emotion unfolding throughout the poem, with actions and reactions. The day begins with students rereading the text independently. Prior to rereading the text, inform students that to answer the focus question, they will be analyzing the structure of the poem; specifically, the way the author used stanza breaks.
