The purpose of the first close reading day is to develop every reader's understanding of the story's plot, and to focus their analysis on the development of the main character, Rabbit. Students will draw upon their skills of: citing evidence to support inferences about characters; comparing and contrasting characters; using context to define words and phrases that support an overall understanding of the text; and ultimately, analyzing the part of the text that sets up the author's initial characterization of Rabbit. Students will use this information as their basis to trace Rabbit's development throughout the story. Special Materials: Student guided notes sheet Copies of the anchor text for all students
