Today's lesson focuses on the metaphor Helen Keller uses in paragraph 3 to describe her life as a deaf and blind child. Through a close look at the paragraph, students understand the confusion and isolation Helen felt living with her disabilities. This lesson’s questions deconstruct the symbolic meaning of the lost ship metaphor Helen Keller uses. Students may work in small groups or pairs as they return to the text to explore these questions, capturing their thinking on the student guided notes sheet. Explicit teacher instruction will be needed to explain nautical terminology. The day's focus question should be completed independently. Special Materials: copies of text and student notes page, visuals to share with class (provided)
