Day one focuses on helping students understand the structure of the writing, and begin to unpack some of the challenging figurative language. The day is structured so that first, students identify the sequential structure of the piece, then, move on to identify sensory language and how it describes the setting. Finally, students focus on the changes in Helen's mood from the beginning to the end, laying the groundwork for unpacking the more challenging figurative language and message of the piece in the coming days.
