This lesson focuses on character responses to challenges in order to help students begin to develop an understanding of the theme of Pitman's story. The day begins with a shared reading of the opening of the text. Students are then asked to re-read a critical scene before answering text-dependent questions. Students may work in small groups or partners as they return to the text to explore these questions, capturing their thinking on the student guided notes sheet. The focus question should be completed independently. Special Materials: - Copies of "Why the Dog Hates the Cat" for every student - Student Guided Notes sheet
