This lesson focuses on finding evidence in the text to contrast a major character with the other characters in the story so that students fully understand the theme Norman Pittman is conveying. The day begins with an independent rereading of key sections of the text. Students then investigate text dependent questions, which ask them to explore key contrasts within the text. Students may work in small groups or partners to return to the texts to explore these questions, capturing their thinking on the guided notes sheet.
