Big Ideas: When values are represented in different forms, it may be necessary to convert between the different forms to perform calculations and make comparisons between values. This lesson builds upon students' previous work with percents and decimals. In this task, students will have to compare two different ways to compute overtime pay, utilizing either a percent or a decimal number. After they decide on a correct strategy, they must then use it to calculate the pay of someone that works 54 hours (regular time plus overtime). The mathematical concepts in this lesson lead to students' future work with simplifying expressions and solving equations with multiple steps.
