This lesson expands on the students' understanding of the layered meanings of the poem, and asks them to specifically look at the connotative meanings of the adjectives in order to begin to identify the tone of the poem. The adjectives the students are asked to analyze paint a more nuanced picture of the train, and are clues to how Dickinson feels about the development of the railroad. The analysis of these words will lay the foundation for further analysis of tone in the following lesson.
