This lesson lays the groundwork for the remaining four days of close reading instruction. Students grapple and engage with complex text on their own. Then, through a read aloud, students who may not be fluent will have an opportunity to listen to a fluent reader, and gain familiarity with the text. This lesson's questions ground students in the text, focusing attention on the author, setting, and, context for the speech, ultimately leading to the author’s purpose.
