This lesson helps students understand the key events that comprise the beginning of the story. It also supports students in building 'right there' knowledge about the fox and Jemima's interaction that will support their comprehension of the text on following days, namely, the motivations of the fox. The day begins with a teacher read aloud in order to gain familiarity with the gist and vocabulary. Students will work in pairs as they return to the text to explore text-dependent questions. The focus question, describing what happens when Jemima and the fox meet for the first time, should be completed independently. Special Materials: Students should have access to the following materials for this lesson: - student guided notes sheet - copies of the anchor text for all students
