This lesson focuses on finding important details about the groups of animals called coleoids and mollusks in order to help students build their knowledge about the text. Their knowledge of these vocabulary words will help them compare and contrast these groups of animals using details from the text. The day begins with a read aloud of page 1 of the text. Students are then asked to read the first page of the text independently prior to exploring the text-dependent questions. Students will stop and jot important details on the student guided notes sheet independently. The focus question should be also be completed independently. Special Materials: Students should have access to the following materials for this lesson: - Student guided notes sheet - Copies of the anchor text for all students
