On this third day of close reading, students expand their analysis to piece together the narrator's various claims made throughout the text. The text structure of this short story is slightly unusual in that the narrator presents an argument through asides to the reader, while providing short tales to support each of his claims. This lesson guides students to piece together the narrator's overall argument and advice to the reader, which will become more important as they begin considering the dramatic irony created by the difference between his perspective and that of his audience.
