In this second day of close reading, the students again focus on one section of the text, pages two through five, in which the narrator recounts his first train robbery. The students analyze the incidents and dialogue from this retelling, which establishes a pattern in his interactions with train passengers. By comparing and contrasting the narrator's statement that he "doesn't like that part of the business" with his interactions, students are guided to a critique of the narrator's character.
