After establishing a thorough understanding of the poem's setting and the approaching winter, students will begin to shift their focus to the geese as the characters in the poem. They will continue their careful examination of word choice by Rachel Field as they explore how the geese respond to the changing seasons. At this point in the lesson series, students should be working with their own copy of the poem. The shared copy of the poem should reflect student thinking and input as they take ownership of the close reading work. Students should be completing the notes sheets and focus question independently. Special Materials: Projected copy or chart of poem from previous lessons Copy of poem and student guided notes sheet for each student Highlighters or pencils to mark up text Projected copy of student guided notes sheet
