This first lesson enables students to become familiar with the poem and to establish an understanding of the setting. For this lesson, the poem will be read aloud to the students using a projected copy or chart of the poem. In repeated readings, students will focus on the words and phrases that describe where and when the poem takes place. Students will collaborate to create a shared chart that records the descriptive words and phrases from the text and guides the students to visualize those words as a strategy to help them determine the setting. The response to the focus question should be completed independently by the students.
