This is lesson four of a five day close reading of the text, "Benjamin Franklin: Inventor, Printer, Writer." This lesson explores a section of text that is rich in time-period norms and includes a cause-effect relationship. Fifth grade students should be able to discern the cause-effect text structure in this section of text and explain how the evidence supports specific points. Standard RI.4.5 is noted rather than RI.5.4 because this close reading explores just one text, however, the added difficulty of shifting structures across a single text warrants analysis and time. Special Materials: Students need their own copy of the text. Teachers may also choose to project the text for all to be able to see for the lesson.
