Big Idea: Multiplication can be interpreted as scaling or re-sizing. In this lesson, students are presented with scenarios in which an understanding of multiplication as repeated addition is not adequate. These scenarios expand their understanding of multiplication to include scaling (re-sizing). Students will demonstrate their understanding of scaling by creating visual representations of the scaling scenarios along with a corresponding multiplication sentence.
