This lesson focuses on the vocabulary used in the text. There are bold print words in the text that are included in the glossary, so students need to know how to utilize this text feature. There are also words that require students to use context clues to determine the meaning. It is imperative that students know how to determine the meaning of unknown words by using the context clues within the text. The supporting questions will lead students to successfully answer the focus question about the author's word choice, 'great', in the title. The day begins with an introduction and read aloud of the text. Students may then work in pairs or in small groups to answer the text dependent questions, capturing their thinking on the guided notes sheet. The focus question will be answered independently. Special Materials: Student guided notes sheet and copies of the anchor text for all students
