Students use “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie and Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave by Frederick Douglass as mentor texts to analyze how an author uses parallel structure and adverbial phrases. Students revise their narrative to include parallel structure and adverbial phrases.
