The focus of today's lesson is for students to contrast the reactions of Casey and the fans by examining the author's deliberate word choices. By making comparisons between characters ("the fans" being a character in the poem), students will begin to consider the structure of the poem. The day begins with students rereading the text with a partner or independently. Prior to rereading the text, students should be reminded to be aware of their own thinking as they make inferences based on the word choices in the poem. Students may work in small groups or with partners as they return to the text to explore these questions, capturing their thinking on the student guided notes sheet.
