This lesson introduces students to the text they'll use for the next four days of lessons, and clarifies some basic understandings they need in order to make sense of the poem's meaning. This lesson's questions focus on helping students understand who is speaking in the poem (a little boy), as well as who he is addressing (the mouse). It also focuses on the illustration that goes along with the poem, which might easily be overlooked. Finally, the lesson will help students begin to analyze the main character of the poem, setting them up for the following lesson in which they will distinguish his point of view. This lesson's focus question can be answered independently, with students using examples from the class discussion of the supporting questions. Special Materials: Large version of poem (projected) Large version of guided notes sheet (projected) Student copies of guided notes sheet Student copies of poem (optional for Day 1)
