This lesson plan is anchored by the text "Lincoln's Missing Bodyguard" from Smithsonian.com. This lesson's focus question is: What are the different perspectives on John Parker’s role in Lincoln’s assassination? In this lesson, students will build on previous knowledge about Paul Martin's point of view on Parker with the perspectives of others in the text, which will then be used in the culminating writing assessment in determining the author's purpose. Students will dive into the particular section of the text in which Paul Martin presents different perspectives in order to determine the meaning of words and phrases used. Students will identify the different perspectives presented and weave in textual evidence to support their explanations. Special Materials: Anchor Text, Student Notes
