In this lesson, students will gain a basic understanding of two of the characters. They should come away understanding that Jack and his mother are poor, can no longer rely on their cow for food, and that Jack is ready to help his mother with their problems. Students will need to be able to find key details in the text and create an illustration with captions based on those details. This lesson will provide a basis for the students to later understand the motivation behind Jack's perseverance in overcoming the challenges he faces in the story, an understanding needed for Day 5. Special Materials: * Copies of the anchor text for every student * Copies of the student notes sheet for every student
