This lesson focuses on how the author uses language to evoke a sense of time and place. Readers will call upon, and augment, their skills in locating language related to different settings (physical, temporal, and cultural). It is vital that readers have a full understanding of the entire range of settings in the text, as meaning lies in context. The day begins with a dramatic rereading of the text, with students following along and marking up the text. Students may work in pairs as they return to the text to explore today's questions, but the focus question should be completed independently.
