This lesson focuses on introducing students to the characters in the story, specifically how they interact, and has them begin the process of understanding how author Norman Pitman uses character relationships to convey his overall message to his readers. The day begins with reading the text aloud. Then students are asked to focus on the first page of the text prior to tackling the text-dependent questions. Students may work together or in small groups as they go back to the text to find evidence of the characters' relationships, writing down their thinking on the student guided notes sheet. The focus question should be completed independently. Special Materials: - Copies of "Why the Dog Hates the Cat" for every student - Student Guided Notes sheet
