This lesson requires students to understand the role Aunt Polly plays in the failure of Tom's plan to play hooky. The day begins with the teacher's reading of the text from the point at which Aunt Polly enters the story. Students are then asked to reread the selection in preparation for answering the text-dependent questions related to this passage. Once they have read and annotated the section of the text independently, students may work in small groups to answer the supporting questions on the student guided notes sheet. Finally, the students will independently answer the focus question. Special Materials: Copies of the text, "Playing Hooky" for each student Copies of the guided notes sheet for each student Pens, pencils, and highlighters for annotation
