Big Ideas:
Equations can be used to represent real-world and mathematical situations.
Models can be used to represent real-world and mathematical situations
This lesson builds on students' work with multiplying whole numbers and fractions and solving real world problems. This task uses a petting zoo scenario; students interpret real-world math problems involving whole numbers and fractions. Students must determine when they need to multiply and when they need to apply a different mathematical operation. Students are expected to solve all 5 of the problems using a visual model and an equation. The mathematical concepts in this lesson build toward students' future work with multiplying rational numbers and solving real world problems.
