This lesson requires students to understand Tom and Sid's relationship and to determine how the long dialogue between them contributes to the plot development of "Playing Hooky". The day begins with a dramatic read aloud of the dialogue. Students are then asked to reread the selected text independently in preparation for answering the text-dependent questions related to this passage. Once they have read and annotated the text selection independently, they may work in pairs to answer the supporting questions on the student guided notes sheet. Finally, the students will independently answer the focus question. Special Materials: Copies of the text, "Playing Hooky" for each student Copies of the guided notes sheet for each student Pens, pencils, and highlighters for annotation
