This lesson requires students to determine the meaning conveyed by the sentence, "Monday morning found Tom Sawyer miserable," as it relates to Tom's feelings of dread about returning to school that morning. The day begins with a shared reading of the text, during which the students will follow along while the text is read aloud by the teacher. Students are then asked to read paragraph 1 independently in preparation for answering the text-dependent questions related to this passage. Once they have read and annotated paragraph 1 independently, the teacher leads them in a shared writing to answer the supporting questions on the student guided notes sheet. Finally, the students will independently answer the focus question. Special Materials: Copies of the text, "Playing Hooky" for each student Copies of the guided notes sheet for each student Pens, pencils, and highlighters for annotation
