This lesson lays the groundwork for the remaining four days of close reading instruction. Through a read aloud, students gain familiarity with the text and some vocabulary. This lesson’s questions emphasize understanding how time and place change between stanza 1 and stanza 4 in the poem “Daffodils” and how the setting in stanza one seems to impact the poet's mood and experience in stanza four. Through a series of scaffolded questions that target stanzas one and four of the poem, students will gain an understanding of the poet's experience with setting and how this experience impacted his mood. Students may work in small groups or partners as they return to the text to explore these questions, capturing their thinking on the student guided notes sheet. The focus question, a written response describing how the poet’s experience with setting in stanza one impacts his mood and experience in stanza four, should be completed independently.
