Today, students will be exploring the choices made by Howard Bennett. During this close reading, students will explore his use of humor, hyperbole, and informal tone to make the information presented understandable and entertaining for readers. The humor used by the author is highlighted in the focus question. The supporting questions provide a clear and solid foundation for the paragraph in order for the students to connect to the humor in this section. Understanding the humor will help students to later be able to pick out the main ideas from the article without getting side tracked by the exaggerations made by the author as humor. Understanding the purpose of this section will help students tomorrow when they dissect the shift made by the author in the middle of the article.
