This lesson helps students to uncover the details that support the main ideas of the second half of the article. The main ideas in this article can be hard to decipher because they are actually in two different parts of the text; this lesson helps students begin to sort out the information at the end of the article. The supporting questions break down the new information into manageable parts, which will ensure students will be able to determine the main ideas and contrast the differences in information provided by the author. The lesson will begin with students rereading the second half of the article. They should then complete the guided notes sheet in pairs or small groups using the text to guide their answers. The focus question should then be completed independently while using the text. Answers to the focus question can be used as a formative assessment and having students look over each others responses to the focus question may be a good chance for reflective discussion. Special Materials: - Copy of "Ever Wonder Why Babies Drool?" by Howard Bennett - Copy of the Student Guided Notes Sheet - Highlighter to use when referring to the text (optional)
