This lesson helps students to uncover the details that support the main ideas of the first half of the article. The main ideas in this article can be hard to decipher because they are actually in two different parts of the text; this lesson helps students begin to sort the information in the beginning of the article. The supporting questions break down the new information into manageable parts, which will lead students to determine the supporting details. The lesson will begin with a rereading of the entire article aloud. Students should then reread the first half of the article and complete the guided notes sheet in pairs or small groups, using the text to guide their answers. The focus question should then be completed independently while using the text. Answers to the focus question can be used as a formative assessment and having students look over each other's responses to the focus question may be a good chance for reflective discussion. Special Materials: - Copy of "Ever Wonder Why Babies Drool?" by Howard Bennett - Copy of the Student Guided Notes Sheet - Highlighter to use when referring to the text (optional)
