This lesson focuses on making meaning of an important phrase in the text. Understanding this phrase will support students when they respond to the culminating writing task. The day starts with students rereading the story's introduction independently, annotating important details and phrases. As a class and in pairs, students then answer text-dependent questions to support this analysis. The focus question task should be completed independently, as it can be used as a formative assessment.
Special Materials:
Students should have access to the student guided notes sheet and copies of the anchor text.
