This lesson plan is anchored by the text "A Brief History of the Salem Witch Trials" from Smithsonian.com. The purpose of the first day of close reading is to develop every reader’s familiarity with the meaning and structure of the text. Students will be rereading the text, but focusing on the overview. By doing this, students gain a working knowledge of the basic facts around the Salem Witch Trials. This working knowledge can then be deepened during later lessons. Readers will call upon and augment their skills in analyzing the structure of a text and in supporting their analysis with textual evidence. Special Materials: Student guided notes sheet Copies of the anchor text for all students
