Lesson objective: Compute division of a whole number by a unit fraction by using multiplication.

This lesson helps to build procedural skill with dividing a whole number by a unit fraction. Tape diagrams and number lines are used here because they highlight the number of unit fractions in one whole to support the connection to multiplication. This work develops students' understanding that measurement division has the same meaning regardless of the number used.

Students engage in Mathematical Practice 7 (Look for and make use of structure) as they look for more efficient strategies to divide by a unit fraction by recognizing the structure of whole numbers composed of unit fractions.

Key vocabulary:

  • division
  • unit fraction
